Islam is a religion and not an ethnic group in southwest and south Asia. It has followers from various ethnic backgrounds such as Arabs, Persians, Turks, Bengalis, Pakistanis, and Indians, among others. While there are ethnic groups that are predominantly Muslim in these regions, Islam itself is not an ethnic identity but a religious one.
