The majority of asteroids are composed of rock and metal, with some containing a small amount of ice. Most asteroids are made up of minerals such as silicates, which are compounds containing silicon and oxygen. These rocky asteroids are known as "carbonaceous" asteroids and are the most common type. Some asteroids also have high metal content, consisting of various metallic elements like iron and nickel. Additionally, a smaller group of asteroids, called "C-type" asteroids, contain larger amounts of water and organic compounds. These asteroids can be a source of valuable resources and scientific exploration.
