The Proclamation of 1763 was a British law that aimed to protect Native American rights and prevent conflict between them and American colonists. It established a boundary line along the Appalachian Mountains beyond which colonists were prohibited from settling. The proclamation also restricted the purchase of Native American lands by individuals or colonial governments, reserving this authority for the Crown. British officials were tasked with negotiating any land transactions with Native tribes. However, American colonists largely ignored the proclamation, leading to increased tensions and ultimately to the American Revolution.
