Alfred Wegener tried to prove the theory of continental drift using fossil evidence. He argued that identical fossil species were found on continents that are separated by vast oceans today, suggesting that these continents were once connected. This led him to propose that the continents were once joined together in a single landmass, which he named Pangaea, and that they have since moved apart over time.
