Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) deffinition and example

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year for certain family and medical reasons. It allows employees to take time off to care for a newborn or adopted child, to care for a seriously ill family member, or to attend to their own serious health condition.

For example, if an employee's parent falls seriously ill and requires constant caregiving, the employee can request FMLA leave to take time off work and provide necessary care to their parent. During this leave period, the employee's job is protected, and they have the right to return to the same or equivalent position upon their return to work.
