The Mexican-American War started after the annexation of Texas by the United States in 1845. Border disputes and competing territorial claims led to tensions between Mexico and the U.S. American troops were sent to the disputed border region and a series of battles ensued. The war lasted from 1846 to 1848. Significant battles include the Battle of Palo Alto, Battle of Buena Vista, and the Battle of Veracruz. The U.S. forces, led by General Winfield Scott, captured Mexico City in 1847, marking a turning point in the war. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848, which ended the war and resulted in Mexico ceding nearly half of its territory to the United States.
