The split between the two sects has been since the death of Muhammad. Sunni Muslims remain the majority in most Muslim countries with the exception of Iraq and Iran. So like, way back when Muhammad died, the Muslim community kind of split into two groups. The majority of Muslims in most countries are called Sunni Muslims, except in Iraq and Iran. The split was like, not super violent or anything, because the Shi'ites didn't win the whole "who's gonna be in charge of the Muslim world" competition way back then.
