Although history includes famous dates and important people, it is about much more than names and numbers. Historians try to figure out what caused people to act the way they did. For example, many students learn the story of Texas's independence, won in 1836. They learn the names of the people involved—William Travis, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie. They learn about places such as the Alamo and events such as the Battle of San Jacinto. But the most important part is not who and when, but why and how. Why did Texans seek independence from Mexico at all? A good historian tries to answer questions such as this.
