In 1954, the Supreme Court made a decision that changed the face of education in America. The case, known as Brown vs. Board of Education, was centered on eight-year-old Linda Brown, who was African American. Brown was forced to go to an all-black school even though a white school was closer. Like many towns, Brown's hometown of Topeka, Kansas, practiced a court-sanctioned "separate but equal" policy, in which students were separated by race. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court declared that this form of segregation was unconstitutional, and it ordered all schools to integrate. The ruling made public school segregation illegal, but many people feel that there is still more work to be done.
