In April 2010, the tiny three-island territory of Tokelau in the South Pacific Ocean declared itself a whale sanctuary. Sanctuaries are places where whale hunting is banned. Though Tokelau is small, its ban could have an enormous effect. Tokelau is a group of three coral islands. Roughly 1,500 people live there. Together, the three islands cover just five square miles (13 square kilometers) of land. However, Tokelau controls a zone of ocean that stretches 200 miles (320 kilometers) from its shoreline. The zone covers 116,000 square miles (300,000 square kilometers) of water. Tiny Tokelau has now banned whale hunting across this entire area. International whale advocates promptly praised Tokelau's ban.
