The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a lovely place, but some people do not know about the wonderful Garden. Botanical Gardens have been around for a very long time, and like company names, and band names, they must be founded. The founder – Peggy Martin – founded the ATL Botanical Garden in, according to atlantabg.org, 1976. The best part is it couldn’t be planted anywhere better than the heart of Georgia; Atlanta. But where is it specifically? Well, this wondrous Alice In Wonderland beauty can be found at 1345 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309.

There are, as well, some very lovely plants. For example there’s the Aphrodite Hybrid Sweetshrub! The Sweetshrub can grow to 5-8 feet tall, they have beautiful, fragrant, red blooms that will add color and sophistication. And did you know they’re resistant to deer? It also boasts very large flowers that resemble red magnolias, which appear amid glossy, tropical-looking foliage. But enough about the Sweetshrub, Chinese cotoneasters are just as good! They can be taller than a Sweetshrub as well, they can grow 20-40 centimeters each year. However, as delicious as they look, the California Poison Control Center lists cotoneasters as Level 4 toxic plants. Ingesting their poisonous parts affects the heart, liver, kidney or brain. Cotoneasters' leaves, berries and flowers all contain cyanogenic glycosides. Only bees, birds and other pollinators that they can attract can feast on whatever delicious juices it can provide. However unlike the cotoneaster a Red Lotus Tree is very much edible! Lotus Tree’s have been eaten as food for over 7,000 years in Asia, as things such as stir-fries of course. Lotus Flowers are even believed to have Medicinal, or, have healing properties, uses! According to Zhi Herbals “It can be used to enhance euphoria and feelings of wellbeing, and can be used to enhance dreaming and visions. It may also help to relive pain.”

Popularity is just as important as what flowers are edible and which aren’t. Which brings me to my next point; How popular is the Atlanta Botanical Garden? Well we can only assume around 10,000 people come by every year, which is a good guess and a common number amongst things such as Botanical Gardens and Fair’s. However looking over their 2022 annual report we’re far from right. Over 760,593 people visited! Not only that but there are numerous events that happen there. For example in 2021-2022 they featured the Alice in Wonderland exhibit! One of their past events that really piqued my interest was ‘Beekeeping: Getting Started.’ If you went to this class you got to learn the basics of being a beekeeper. Another event was ‘Chocolate Covered Weekend.’ Chocolate Covered Weekend was a weekend where you did family-friendly activities over the weekend! During this sweet-filled weekend you got to learn about the chocolate making process, and explore the taste and use of cacao! Then another station was the Chocolate Creation, there, you’d get to create your own chocolate-goodness and satisfy your sweet tooth!

It’s not everyday you get to learn new things about plants and animals! The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a lovely place to do just that, and the events seem fun! This just might awaken the plant mom within me.
