n 1909, chief engineer of AT&T John J. Carty made an exciting announcement. He announced that there would be a transcontinental telephone line in 1915. However, the technology to build this phone line did not exist yet. AT&T offered a handsome payment for anyone who invented an amplifier that would help the company meet this goal. In 1912, Dr. Lee De Forest introduced vacuum tubes that would allow sound to travel farther. By summer, AT&T had tested and perfected De Forest's vacuum tubes and had begun installation. The only remaining step, building a phone line from Denver to San Francisco, was completed in 1914. AT&T reached its goal months before the deadline.
