In Unit 3, you will be studying the straight news story and then writing one of your own. What I will be specifically looking for in this assignment is as follows:

1. You can follow the inverted pyramid form.

2. You can write an interesting and catchy headline.

3. You can use a summary lead. (Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How? answered in the first few sentences.)

4. You are reporting only facts (opinions should be left out).

5. You are using information gained from at least 2 different sources (primary or secondary) in your story.

6. You are attributing the info you gained from the source (giving credit to the source).

The specific topic of your story is up to you. You do NOT have to write an article on a global event like the war in the Middle East. It is ok to keep your topic closer to home. For example, you can write a news story about a local charity event that raised money for pet shelters or you could write about your friend winning a dance contest, etc. Anything like that will be fine. I am more looking at the form of your story rather than if it includes hard-hitting news.

Your story should be at least 1/2 to 3/4 page long and should meet all of the criteria listed above. You will submit your straight news story to the drop box in Unit 3 Lesson 6.
