An Electoral Commission appointed by the Senate investigated the issue ruling that all the disputed votes go to Hayes making him the winner. Hayes agreed to the Compromise of 1877 to soothe hurt feelings and prevent Southern Democratic opposition. Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
