The initial purpose of the Constitutional Convention was to amend the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was the governing document of the United States prior to the Constitution, but it had several weaknesses that made it difficult to effectively govern the country. The delegates who attended the Convention initially intended to make changes to the Articles of Confederation in order to strengthen the central government and address the shortcomings of the existing system. However, as the Convention progressed, it became clear that simply amending the Articles would not be sufficient, leading to the development of a new constitution altogether. Therefore, while the original purpose was to amend the Articles of Confederation, the Convention ultimately led to the creation of the United States Constitution.
