If Freedman had eyelids, he would have blinked his eyes in disbelief. As the earliest version of the South Bay Company’s androids, his face was constructed without eyelids. He just stood in front of the proclamation and stared at the headline, "Androids Released from Unpaid Service."

"What’s that hunk of metal staring at?" Freedman’s owner, Sir, walked up to see the proclamation posted on the doors of the council building. As Sir’s eyes scanned the text, his face turned red.
"No way," Sir said. "The government can’t take my property away from me like that. Who does this council master think he is?"
Freedman thought about what the proclamation meant. He did not have to work for Sir for free. He did not have to obey Sir’s commands, and Sir would not be allowed to shock his processor. But where will I go? Where will I live? How will I support myself? Can I get a job somewhere?
"Come on, Freedman," Sir said sharply. His voice issued a challenge.
Freedman didn’t budge.
"Didn’t you hear me, you tin can? Let’s go home."
Freedman turned and walked away. From that point on, Freedman would be his own boss.
