What is Africa (Boshongo-Bantu): Bumba’s Creation in Leeming's book: The world of myth: an arthrology 3rd edition in pg. 36-37

In the Boshongo-Bantu creation myth, Africa is said to have been created by the god Bumba. According to the myth, in the beginning, there was only darkness and a great emptiness. Bumba, feeling lonely and desiring companionship, decided to create the world. He vomited out the sun, the moon, and stars, and then earth and water. However, his first attempt at creating living creatures was a failure, as they were too white and couldn't survive in the bright sun.

Bumba then tried again and vomited out a leopard, a crocodile, a turtle, and a serpent, who then created the rivers and valleys. Bumba then created humans, but they were still without color, so he sent a chameleon to go around the earth and paint them different colors. The chameleon did as instructed, and thus different human races emerged.

Thus, according to this myth, Africa was created as part of the process of the world's creation by the god Bumba.

In Eric Leeming's book, "The World of Myth: An Anthology," 3rd edition, on pages 36-37, he discusses the Boshongo-Bantu creation myth known as Bumba's Creation. This myth explains the origin of the universe and the creation of Africa.

According to the Boshongo-Bantu people, Bumba is the supreme god and the creator of all things. In the myth, Bumba is described as a giant, pale-skinned figure with a big belly. He lived in complete darkness and loneliness until he felt a great pain in his stomach, causing him to vomit.

Out of his vomit came the sun, the moon, and the stars. Bumba continued to vomit, and from his vomit emerged landscapes, rivers, trees, animals, and eventually, the first human beings. This process of creation formed the continents, including Africa.

Africa, as we know it today, was created through this vomit of Bumba. It was believed to be the birthplace of humanity and home to diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultures. This myth serves to explain the origins of the world and the unique creation of Africa within the Boshongo-Bantu belief system.
