Aravind Adiga's first novel, The White Tiger, was published in 2008. Written in English, the novel portrays a former working-class Indian man, Balram Halwai, writing a series of letters detailing his rise from poverty to wealth. However, readers wander into a confession of murder, theft, and corruption disguised as an entertaining narrative. The comical narrative voice belies a pointed criticism of the condition of India. Adiga reveals a brual class system in which the rich prey upon the poor. The poor obey the rich and make their situation worse by obeying. The White Tiger's portrayal of India has made it an international sensation. For example, the publisher's website calls the Man Booker Prize-winning book "a page-turning masterpiece of complex human emotion."

Why is the publisher's website an inappropriate source for an essay about Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger?

c
C. The publisher's website does not have an author listed.

Many of my friends are more focused on getting into college than on their academic development. Isn't something wrong with this picture when kids go through school just so they can get into college and eventually get a better job. Many students just go through the motions of passing tests so they can advance to the next phase of life. Take Raina for example. She writes on the website for her tutoring service, MemoryMe, that she hardly remembers what she learned in middle and high school. When did tests become more important than what we actually learned?

If I am not a math major, what is the use of Pythagorean theorem for me in real life. Even though I do not understand or want to know about certain subjects in detail, I have to "learn" about them to pass my classes. The whole time I am learning about cosines in trigonometry, I may be thinking of learning a practical skill.

Sadly, the US public system does not listen to students. Why shouldn't teenagers be in charge of their education? You might be surprised how knowledgeable a teenager can be about his or her educational need. For example, I want to be a professional skater. I would like to learn more about choreography and physics.

Education should be what defines it as: "the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life." Give us a chance to prepare for mature lives by letting us choose what we want to study.

Sama needs to write a paper covering the same topic this essay covers. She finds this essay helpful for ideas but inappropriate for her research. Which keywords would help her find the most information for her paper on the internet?

a
A. Pythagorean theorem
b
B. Standardized tests
c
C. Practical education
d
D. Teenager surprises

B. Standardized tests

Fire and Ice

BY ROBERT FROST
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Ozymandias

By Percy SHELLEY

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
