Photosynthesis is the biological process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose (a sugar) and oxygen. The process takes place in chloroplasts, using a pigment called chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight. Photosynthesis is vital because it is the primary source of oxygen in the atmosphere, as well as a major contributor to the global carbon cycle, producing the organic compounds and energy needed for all life on Earth.
