Mercury is a neurotoxin and found in some types of fish. Pregnant women are not allowed to eat certain types of fish because it can harm the fetus. Mercury ends up in fish because

Mercury can be found in coal and we burn coal for electricity releasing mercury into atmosphere which then falls on land and into groundwater.

Mercury can be found as fish lures and they are injested and people eat these fish.

Mercury can also be deposited into bodies of water through natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and weathering of rocks and soil. It can accumulate in fish as they consume small organisms that have also absorbed mercury. Over time, larger fish can accumulate high levels of mercury in their bodies, making them dangerous for consumption.
