When and why did the environmental movement start?

The environmental movement can be traced back to the mid-19th century when concerns were raised about the impact of industrialization on the environment. However, the modern environmental movement which advocated for greater awareness of environmental issues such as pollution, conservation of natural resources, and protection of endangered species emerged in the 1960s and 70s. This was due to several factors such as the publication of Rachel Carson's book "Silent Spring" in 1962 which documented the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment, the growing awareness of the impacts of air and water pollution, and the formation of several non-governmental organizations such as the Sierra Club and Greenpeace that worked to raise awareness and advocate for environmental protection.
