The development of linear perspective allowed artists to create a more realistic three-dimensional representation of space on a two-dimensional surface. It allowed them to accurately portray depth and distance and create the illusion of objects and figures appearing to recede or come forward in space. It also allowed them to create more complex compositions and give a sense of hierarchy and order to the elements within the scene.
