Sure. A police officer can hold your life in his hands, whereas a grocery bagger probably will never be in that position.
Our laws hold everyone to high standards who injures or kills another person. Even the carry-out boy is liable if he maims you with the grocery cart or his car.
When the reporter makes a mistake, no one is usually injured, although a few have been sued for publishing erroneous information that may have hurt someone's reputation.
