"When a reporter makes a mistake in a magazine article, you can run a correction; but when a health care worker makes a mistake, someone can die." Reflecting on this statement, should we hold people in certain professions to higher standards of legal accountability and responsibility?

Sure. A police officer can hold your life in his hands, whereas a grocery bagger probably will never be in that position.

Our laws hold everyone to high standards who injures or kills another person. Even the carry-out boy is liable if he maims you with the grocery cart or his car.

When the reporter makes a mistake, no one is usually injured, although a few have been sued for publishing erroneous information that may have hurt someone's reputation.

Do you think this goes along with the Utilitarian theory?

does the study of ethics make someone more virtuous or it doesn't have an effect on one's moral character?

it depends on the person

no yes
