The rock formations that are indicative of the regression of the oceans are shoreline deposits such as beaches, sand dunes, and tidal flats, as well as the sedimentary rocks formed from these deposits, such as sandstone and limestone. Other indicators include terraces and raised marine platforms that were once at sea level but are now exposed above it. Fossil evidence of marine life in rocks that are now far inland can also indicate ocean regression.
