The layer located farthest from the surface of the Earth in a temperate region is the bedrock or parent material layer. This layer is composed of solid rock that underlies all the other layers and is typically located several meters or more below the surface. It is the bottommost layer of the soil profile and provides the foundation upon which the other layers are built.
