John F. Kennedy supported civil rights by promoting legislation that aimed to end racial discrimination and segregation. He proposed the Civil Rights Act of 1963, which prohibited discrimination in public places and in the workplace on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Kennedy also sent federal troops to protect African American students attempting to integrate schools in the South. Additionally, he established the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity to ensure equal opportunities for all Americans in federal employment. Though his efforts were cut short by his assassination, Kennedy's commitment to civil rights helped pave the way for progress in the decades that followed.
