What was the purpose of the Vietnamization policy?

The purpose of the Vietnamization policy was to transfer the responsibility of the war effort in Vietnam from the United States to the South Vietnamese government and military forces. The policy aimed to gradually reduce the number of American troops in Vietnam while increasing the combat role of the South Vietnamese army. It was hoped that this would lead to a successful conclusion to the war and the reunification of North and South Vietnam under a South Vietnamese government.
