The stages of mitosis

1. Prophase: The chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear membrane begins to break down. Microtubules of the spindle also start to form.

2. Metaphase: The chromosomes move to the center of the cell and line up along the metaphase plate. The spindle fibers attach to the centromeres.

3. Anaphase: The spindle fibers pull the sister chromatids apart and towards opposite poles of the cell. The cell begins to elongate.

4. Telophase: The separated chromosomes arrive at opposite poles and begin to uncoil. The nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes, creating two nuclei.

5. Cytokinesis: The cell splits into two daughter cells, each with its own nucleus and set of chromosomes.
