Commodore Perry was a U.S. naval officer who played a key role in opening Japan to trade with the West in the mid-19th century. In 1853, he led a fleet of ships into Tokyo Bay and negotiated the first treaty between Japan and the United States, known as the Treaty of Kanagawa. This treaty allowed American ships to stop at two ports in Japan, providing new opportunities for trade and exchange between the two nations. Perry's mission helped to end Japan's self-imposed isolation and accelerated its modernization and Westernization.
