Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, caused the United States to enter World War II. The attack led to the destruction of almost half of the US Pacific Fleet and over 2,400 American lives were lost. President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan the next day, stating that the attack was a "date which will live in infamy."
