Robert Clive (1725-1774), also known as Clive of India, was a British officer and statesman who played a major role in establishing British control over India. He was born in England and later joined the British East India Company in Madras (now Chennai). He became a successful military leader and was responsible for several victories against Indian rulers, including the Battle of Plassey in 1757, which paved the way for British dominance in India. Clive also served as governor of Bengal and played a key role in developing Britain's economic and political power in India.
