The French Canadians were able to retain their language, law, customs, and freely practice their Roman Catholic religion because of the Quebec Act of 1774, which was passed by the British Parliament. This act recognized and protected the French language, law, and culture in Quebec, and allowed the Catholic Church to maintain its structures and practices. Additionally, the act granted religious tolerance for other religions in Quebec, such as Protestantism. This helped to foster a sense of distinct Québécois identity and culture within Canada.
