At this point, a theme or central idea of the text ought to be pretty easy to locate. Remember the theme will be unstated, but you should be able to make an inference about what it is through the character’s actions, setting and plot.
One possible theme of the text could be the dangers and challenges of exploration. Throughout the story, the characters face numerous obstacles and risks as they descend deeper into the Earth. They must navigate treacherous terrain, endure extreme temperatures, and battle against creatures that they have never encountered before. Despite their bravery and determination, they ultimately realize that their quest may be too risky and they are forced to retreat. This suggests that the theme of exploration is not only exciting and adventurous, but also fraught with danger and uncertainty.
