Fair use definition

Fair use is a legal doctrine that provides certain exceptions to copyright law, allowing for the use of a copyrighted work without permission from the copyright holder. This applies to purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. The determination of whether a specific use of a copyrighted work is fair use depends on four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion used, and the effect of the use on the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
