The speaker of the Texas House of Representatives is elected by the

members of the House itself, at the beginning of each regular session of the Texas Legislature. The speaker is chosen from among the House's 150 members, and must receive a majority of the votes in order to be elected. Once elected, the speaker serves a two-year term, and has the power to appoint committee members and leaders, direct legislative business, and determine the agenda of the House. The speaker is also responsible for ensuring that the House operates fairly and efficiently, and that all members have the opportunity to participate in the legislative process.
