Hans is a reliable and capable guide, with a stoic personality. Quotation: "Hans went on with an imperturbable gravity that reassured me. He seemed to me a man who would always succeed in everything he undertook."

Harry is quick-tempered and impulsive, but also brave in the face of danger. Quotation: "Harry, who had been watching him, sprang forward the instant that he fell and dragged him back by the feet, just as a huge rock crashed down on the spot where had been standing."

The Professor's logical mind is shown as he approaches the journey scientifically. Quotation: "Before leaving Berlin, I had carefully studied all the documents relating to the equipment of a party of six persons, furnished by a gunmaker of the city..."
