The South Carolina city that was burned, despite the commanding officer's order to burn only the key buildings, was Columbia. During the American Civil War, on February 17, 1865, Union troops under General William Tecumseh Sherman captured Columbia and set fire to much of the city, causing widespread destruction. Though Sherman had ordered only key buildings with military significance to be burned, uncontrollable fires spread throughout the city, causing damage to both military and civilian structures.
