President Truman announced his new foreign policy in a speech on March 12, 1947. This speech, known as the Truman Doctrine, came at the very beginning of the Cold War, as tensions between the United States and Soviet Union began to escalate. The Truman Doctrine was a response to the perceived threat of Soviet expansionism and represented a major shift in U.S. foreign policy towards containing communism.
