Jim Crow laws were a system of state and local laws in the United States that were intended to enforce racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans from the late 19th century to the mid-1960s. These laws were designed to institutionalize racial segregation in public places such as schools, churches, restaurants, public transportation, and other areas of public life. They aimed to maintain white supremacy and limit the rights and opportunities of African Americans, including the right to vote, own property, and receive an education or job opportunities. The Jim Crow Laws were abolished by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
