Explain what events and actions caused the conflict between Barbara Frietchie and the Confederate soldiers. Write three to four sentences.

Barbara Frietchie was a Unionist who proudly displayed the American flag in front of her house in Frederick, Maryland during the Civil War. However, when Confederate General Stonewall Jackson and his troops arrived in 1862, they demanded that the flag be taken down as a sign of respect for the Confederacy. Barbara refused to comply with their demands, which caused an altercation between her and the soldiers, resulting in the soldiers shooting holes through the flag.
