In the 1200's conflict between barons and the king

The conflict between King Henry II and Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, arose primarily due to a dispute over the powers of the Church and the State. King Henry II wanted to limit the power of the Church and increase the control of the Crown. He saw Becket as an obstacle to his plans and appointed him Archbishop in the hope that he would support his reforms. However, when Becket became the Archbishop, he began to defend the rights and privileges of the Church against the King's attempts to encroach on them. This led to a series of disagreements and confrontations between the two men. The final straw came when Becket excommunicated some of the King's supporters, which angered Henry and he exclaimed, "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Four knights then took this as an order to murder Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. This act shocked both the Church and the State and led to Becket being seen as a martyr and a saint.

In the 1200's conflict between barons and the king led to the creation of the Magna Carta.

The writers of the American Bill of Rights and the Constitution were inspired by the concepts born in the Magna Carta: that a government should be constitutional, and that the law of the land should apply to everyone.

"To no one will we sell, to no one will we deny or delay, right or justice." During the American Revolution, Magna Carta served to inspire and justify action in liberty's defense. The colonist believed they were entitled to the same rights as Englishmen, rights guaranteed in Magna Carta.
