It is important to note that different time periods in Native American history saw differing treatment. However, generally speaking, during the 19th century, Native Americans were subjected to forced relocation, removal from their ancestral lands, and cultural oppression. The Indian Removal Act of 1830, which allowed the federal government to forcibly remove Native American tribes from their ancestral lands and move them to reservations, was a significant event during this time period.
Many Native Americans would have likely felt angry, frustrated, and powerless during this time period. They were forced to leave their homes, and often faced violence and discrimination from white settlers. Their traditions, cultures, and beliefs were systematically suppressed.
If I were one of the chiefs to whom Chief Joseph was speaking, I would likely have agreed with him. Chief Joseph was a prominent leader who advocated for the peaceful coexistence of Native Americans and white settlers. He understood the importance of honoring treaties and preserving the traditions and beliefs of his people. As such, his message resonates with me and aligns with my own values.
