A mountain climber on Mt. Everest is at 29,035 ft above sea level. A stone at the bottom of the Dead Sea is at 1,349 ft below sea level. What is the difference in elevation between the mountain climber and the stone?
you started down in a hole
went up 1349 feet to ground
then went up ANOTHER 29035 feet from ground to top of the mountain
+5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = + 8
1 - 1 = 0
1 - (-1) = 2
5 - x is x units left of 5 on number line
5 - -x is x units RIGHT of 5 on number line
Whew ! :) You are welcome :)
Difference in elevation = 29,035 ft - (-1,349 ft)
= 30,384 ft
