The purpose of the Freedmen's Bureau was to provide assistance to newly freed African Americans in the United States during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. It provided food, housing, medical care, legal assistance, and education to former slaves and their families. It also helped them to find employment and to secure land ownership.
