Frederick the Wise was an important figure in the Protestant Reformation. He was the Elector of Saxony and a close friend and protector of Martin Luther. He provided Luther with a safe haven at Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the Bible into German. Frederick also provided financial and political support for Luther and the Reformation movement. He was a key figure in the formation of the Schmalkaldic League, a Protestant alliance formed to protect Luther and the Reformation from the Catholic Holy Roman Empire. He also helped to organize the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, which was a major event in the Reformation.
