Johann Tetzel was a Dominican friar and preacher who was commissioned by Pope Leo X to sell indulgences in Germany in 1517. Tetzel was known for his aggressive sales tactics, which included the famous phrase, "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." His actions were a major factor in sparking the Protestant Reformation, as Martin Luther wrote his Ninety-Five Theses in response to Tetzel's indulgence sales.
