Karst topography is caused by the dissolution of soluble rocks, such as limestone, by groundwater. As the groundwater moves through the rock, it dissolves the calcium carbonate, creating underground channels and caves. Over time, these channels and caves can become large enough to form sinkholes, disappearing streams, and other features of karst topography.
