Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms, known as perestroika and glasnost, were largely unsuccessful in achieving their goals of economic and political reform in the Soviet Union. The reforms led to increased economic hardship and political unrest, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
