The 1960 Sharpeville Massacre was a massacre of unarmed black South African protesters by the South African police in the town of Sharpeville, South Africa. The protesters were demonstrating against the apartheid government's pass laws, which required black South Africans to carry identification documents at all times. The police opened fire on the protesters, killing 69 people and injuring 180.
