The Roman assembly, known as the Roman Senate, was similar to the United States Congress in that it was a legislative body made up of elected representatives. The Roman Senate was responsible for passing laws, debating issues, and making decisions on behalf of the Roman people. Like the United States Congress, the Roman Senate was divided into two houses, the Patricians and the Plebeians, and each house had its own set of powers and responsibilities. Additionally, the Roman Senate was responsible for electing the Roman consuls, who served as the executive branch of the Roman government.
